As well as the physical and mental health benefits and stimulus that adventurous activities provide, they also allow individuals to develop confidence, useful life skills and an appetite for challenge.

Gateway Adventure can deliver a wide variety of activities, whether they are land or water based. These can range from walking to climbing, kayaking to raft building or archery to bushcraft as well as many other associated outdoor skills. Whatever activity you choose to take part in you’ll have chance to develop your personal skills and gain confidence in your abilities enabling you to venture out with friends or family or even on your own.







Mountain Training Camping Leader Assessment

This recently launched Mountain Training Camping Leader qualification is a stand-alone qualification and can supplement any other Mountain Training award. It is available for those who wish to supervise overnight camping whether that be camping in the valley on commercial campsites or wild camping in the mountains. As this is a qualification, there is no requirement for prospective candidates to hold a walking qualification to register for this award.


Mountain Training Camping Leader (On-line) Training

To register for this scheme candidates must be at least 17 years old, have some personal or supervisory experience of overnight camping and have a genuine interest in the supervision of groups.

Before attendance, candidates must familiarise themselves with the syllabus by completing the optional online training course. However, the online training course covers all elements of the syllabus using a variety of formats such as presentations, videos, and quizzes to facilitate learning. You may use the online training course as often as you wish in advance of your assessment course. The online training also provides you with an outline of how your assessment course will be delivered and ideas for how you might consolidate your learning.


Consolidation Period

This consolidation period is the time taken between training and assessment. There is no consolidation period, though candidates are advised to have completed the online training course or have had equivalent training prior to undertaking the Camping Leader assessment. Some candidates may benefit from undertaking further personal camping trips or supervising camping groups in a variety of settings. There is currently no time limit on the validity of a training course and some candidates may take several years to complete the qualification. Familiarizing themselves with the syllabus and revisit the online training when necessary.

Prospective candidates wishing to undertake this Mountain Training Camping Leader Assessment course must arrive prepared, familiar with all aspects of the syllabus and must demonstrate competence in the following areas:
• Leadership Skills & Group Management
• Planning & Supervision
• Teaching & Learning Skills
• Camping Equipment
• Camping Food & Cooking

Prior to Attendance

Before booking onto a Camping Leader Assessment course, candidates must make sure that they meet all the following requirements:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Personally undertaken and logged an absolute minimum of five overnight camps, ideally in a variety of contexts
• Have assisted with or overseen at least two group camps. (If personal camping has only been undertaken when also supervising a group, then these two group camps can be part of the total submitted for personal camping)
• Familiar with all the syllabus
• Must be an experienced self-sufficient camper.
• Must have experience of the supervision of camping groups.
• Must have completed an appropriate first aid course.
• Must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least one full day or eight hours of instruction and included an element of assessment.


Accommodation

Although our courses are advertised as non-residential, we have found that some people travel some distance to attend our courses. At Gateway Adventure, we try to accommodate as many people as we can and are aware that individual lifestyles and circumstances can vary a great deal. Therefore, we offer accommodation to all attendees. Thus, giving individuals the opportunity of accommodation the night before, during and even after their course. All you need to do is let us know at the booking stage and we will add the relevant accommodation fees onto your course fee.

Staffing Ratio

Maximum staffing ratio is 1 instructor to 6 participants


Cost

Non-Residential = £100.00

Residential costs are venue dependant (See Accommodation section above)


Course Bookings

Please note, Mountain Training stipulates that all bookings for any Mountain Training Courses must be completed with names entered onto the course list, at least 5 days prior to the course commencement. Bookings under 5 days are not allowed to be placed!

Mountain Training requirements also state that courses that do not reach the minimum booking will either be refunded or rebooked for an alternative date.
